The installation is closed system that shoots balls up to 130 kilometers per hour to create sound patterns in bitter violence. The installation cannot only be seen as an instrument, which Vermeulen can play live, as well as an autonomous system, which creates rhythms with the help of algorithms. It breathes the flavors of rough mechanics and the early experiments of the classical minimal movement.
This project is produced as part of the Summer Sessions Network for Talent Development in a co-production of Metamedia Association and V2_Institute for the Unstable Media.
Thanks to the support of V2, Institute for unstable media, Creative industries fund The Netherlands & MetaMedia Croatia, Philip Vermeulen has been able to do a Summer Session residency in Pula, Istria. He has been experimenting and researching different ways to have precise control over a ball distribution system which enables him to create physical rhythms. This research ended up in the Physical Rhythm Machine. The ‘PRM’ has been showcasing at the 1st Croatian Industrial Biennial.
