In Christian tradition, the ‘Mysteries’ represent concepts that transcend human understanding. Today, the search for salvation and understanding of the Mysteries manifests itself in algorithms and digital technologies due to their transcendent and omnipresent nature (Campbell, 2010). The algorithm becomes an intercessor for the divine or, in some cases, the divine itself. This embrace of the post-human is fuelled by the symbolic potential of the immateriality of code. Through a process of contamination of devotional rituals with digital culture, it manifests itself in new forms of perception of the sacred that we will call mysteries of digital faith or techno-spiritual mysteries.
Mysteria Digitalia, an exercise in (ir)reverence that investigates how Christian sacredness is reconfigured in digital spaces. Inspired by syncretism between sacred and profane, the research draws on a series of content collected on TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and YouTube: these memetic and contemplative fragments are recomposed into a triptych that questions the meaning of the sacred in the age of algorithms.
This project was developed during a residency as part of a Summer Sessions residency at V2_.
